Form Wheel Sculptural Response

The second sculptural response is based on a reading about the Form Wheel. The Form Wheel is a visual representation of actions and objects that materials can take form in. For example, a maze encloses a certain space. There are six different actions in the Form Wheel: enclose, perforate, contract, divide, flatten, and expand. For the response, we are asked to portray two or more actions from the Form Wheel.

For my response, I mainly focused on enclose and flatten. The entire sculpture is made from aluminum foil. Firstly, I created a cube using strips of foil. Then I flattened the cube into an almost 2D square. To enclose the cube, I use larger sheets of foil to wrap around the flattened cube. I used stitches to put together the multiple layers of foil and also to factoring more enclosure into the piece. The main idea I wish to express through the sculpture is to be trapped (in this case, vacuumed) into a confined, limited space. The sewings on both sides are also to reinforce the idea of involuntary.

On the left is an ideation drawing I made for this sculptural response.
