Assignment 1

Why I am in this class?

I am excited to build my concept into prototypes by taking this class– Physical Computing. It can elaborate my ideas in a clearer way. Also, I am interested in artificial intelligence and physical objects. I would like to make my project not only have good concepts but also be thoughtful about the material and texture what I use.

The following are the 5 projects I am interested in:

  1.  Grace State Machine

http://computation-emotion.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html

This is a robot art performance project. I am interesting in performance art especially it is totally work by robots themselves. This will be interesting to see how these robots mimic or play with the performers. This is a project between machine body and human body, an intimate dialog between the organic and artefact. For technical issue, I think the robot can track the human behavior and output to how themselves works.

  1. Puzzle Facade

http://puzzlefacade.com/

Puzzle Facade is a project made by Javier Lloret. This small product is made by arduino that keep tracks of the rotation and orientation. It’s original idea is simple– a interface-cube that people can play in their hands. The most interesting part is, this small product can transmit what you play on a large building. I found out this really interesting is because I am a big fan of the interactive design. For me, this is simple, but echos.

  1. Electromagnetic Drawing

I choose this project because have a background of communication design and I like to draw a lot! I always think of graphics and paintings that are not coming from our hand, but from the machine. This project shows a lot of geometric shape, which I think can be controlled by the machine. But the author didn’t explain how it works in the concept. So, it let me think openly– How if this machine can combine with sensors on brain ot sensors on pulse? It will be interesting to see the graphic and pattern that collects different data from people.

  1. Jam-O-Drum

http://www.jamodrum.net/

Jam-O-Drum is an collaborated audiovisual instrument. This project is a game collecting the velocity from six to twelve people. When I saw this project, I think a lot because it might need to work on the technical issue between the systems. Not only the Physical tablet people are playing with, but also the how to make this data into graphics and sounds. For me, this is really interesting. I always want to make a playful game.

  1. Singer Bots

http://www.singerbots.com/

When I saw this project I have the imagination of how a concert will be in the future. It will be interesting if the instruments can play by the robots. The robot need to know the song, and then will have the musical score, and can make those into sound!
