In my sculpture Haute Nature, I juxtapose two self-contradicting themes, high fashion and flora, communicating human’s relationship with nature. The corset is held together with a ribbon symbolizing the ultimate superficial and materialistic of brands. The corset in high fashion throughout times has represented an unnatural constraint, forcing the body to mold to an idealized shape in complete opposition to nature’s principles. The bodice made of fallen palm fronds, tied together with a white Chanel ribbon, however, shows beauty through its paradox. My sculpture asks the viewer to appreciate how humans find inspiration in nature’s simplicity and originality, by combining the art form of Haute Couture with organic life. I want my sculpture to show how humans can use elements of nature combined with manmade high fashion icons to create art. Man must continue to look to nature for inspiration and its practical and artistic applications, as we try to mimic its beauty in our materialistic world.
