- What do you think of the ten Long Life design criteria? Which criteria in particular might assist in skillfully meeting the challenges created by climate change and how? What criteria would you add or how would you update the current list to account for specific design challenges presented by the Anthropocene?
The ten Long Life design criteria covers up the features to decide whether a particular product can be considered as a long life design or not. I think multi-functional use of an object can be added to the list as well since using an object for different purposes extends the lifetime of an object. And in this way we can save money by not buying extra product for different purposes. For example we can use coffee cups for storing pencils or we can use empty Nutella jar as a candle holder or as a glass for our morning juice.
2) Find an object, device or material that needs to be repaired in some way. Follow the Repair project brief (steps 1-3 for this week) and post responses to each question and images on your LP.
- What object will you repair and why?
I’m going to repair unused bubble wraps, actually I’ll create a purse out of them because I think they have a unique design and I think that they can easily be turned into a different product. I do consider repair to be an important design skill since finding an innovative way to repair also requires specific design skills.
- Do you consider repair to be an important design skill?
Yes of course because, finding an innovative way to repair also requires specific design skills.
Do Research
- What are 2-3 possible ways this object could be repaired? What do you need in order to do the repair?
Sewing them
Construct a Hypothesis
3. What will your process of repair be?
- Collecting bubble wraps
- Gathering them
- Making an aesthetically pleasing design by arranging them
- Sewing them together
- How long do you expect the repair take? How long do you want your repair to last?
It will take approximately an hour.
3) Read the following four articles on repair and answer the following questions.
– At Repair Cafes, ‘Beloved but Broken’ Possessions Find New Life
- Would you like to visit a repair cafe? Why do you think so many people are interested in repair?
I really want to visit the cafe, In nowadays, we increasingly buy more things and throw away more than ever. We use the luxury items we own for shorter times. As soon as these items show the slightest flaw we throw them away and buy a new product. Many things get thrown away within the space of one year.
So I think so many people have become interested in repair in order to contribute towards making our society more sustainable.
– Waste not want not: Sweden to give tax breaks for repairs.
- Would you like to see this kind of tax be possible in your home country?
- Do you think it is possible there or the United States? Why or why not?
I’d like to see, I think it is a great way to cope with buy-and-throw-away culture. The new law can raise awareness of repairing and since more people should work to repair, the unemployment rates can be decreased. I think it won’t work in long run because there are designers out there who are dying to produce and to sell new products.
– Spend the Money for the Good Boots and Wear the Forever
- Were you surprised by this article? Do you agree with the author? Do you think an object has to be expensive to be well made? What might make people want to take care of objects, even if they aren’t expensive?
I wasn’t supposed by the article, I totally agree with his thoughts. An object doesn’t have to be expensive to be well made but what makes good design is the use of quality materials. Unfortunately, clothes that are more inexpensive are more durable. They’re made more carefully so they’re more expensive. The thing is that good quality products lasted for years so consequently buying better product makes you save money in long run.
– Origami-inspired clothing line that grows with kids wins Dyson award
- What do you think of this design? What is most innovative about it? Do you think it’s possible for adults to enjoy long life design clothing or objects that transform/change in other ways (than getting bigger)? What kind of designs might be possible?
It is really interesting, I think the most innovating aspect of this design is that is washable, waterproof and recyclable. I think it is possible for adults to enjoy long life design clothing since those designs can be worn for years and are incredibly durable.
- Come to class prepared to share some wisdom from your culture in a 2-3 minute presentation. What is a perspective on nature, the environment, or a healthy and sustainable community that generations before you have held important (around 100 years)? What makes this wisdom still relevant today? Do both older and younger people respect it? Is it something that you feel other cultures can benefit from knowing about? How do you practice this wisdom in your own life in New York?
“We can take care of the future best by taking care of our environment.”
is an inspirational wisdom saying that is usually told by elders to kids to make them more aware of our natural environment. Since environment means everything in the world around us which can affect our lives, The small changes we can make will turn into big changes which will help make our environment healthier now and in the future.
So growing with this quote, I try to pay attention to my daily habits to help the environment. I get all the stuff that I can recycle. I rinse them out and put them in the recycle bin. I switch lights off when I leave a room. I’m switching off the water while I’m brushing my teeth.
- Research and read an introduction to the Sixth Extinction then visit artist Maya Lin’s project: What’s Missing : whatismissing.net
- How would you describe the Sixth Extinction to a friend who is unfamiliar with it?
Sixth Extinction is the ongoing extinction that we face today. As we are living in the Anthropocene period where the impact of human activity manipulate the environment, many different species have become extinct. Earth is constantly experiencing sudden changes in temperature, pressure, and climate, which means that species are always facing challenges to their survival By burning fossil fuels and cutting down forests, human beings have drastically increased the temperature and acidity of ocean water, meaning that creatures will have to adapt to the changing environment, or die out
- After reviewing the “About page” on the what’s missing site, what is one species that you learned about on this site that has gone extinct?
- What do you think of this site as an artist’s project?
I think the site is aesthetically appealing and well organized.
The use of wide ranges of visuals is beneficial in order to attract the viewers’ attention and to raise awareness on the topic.
- What did you learn on the “what you can do” page? Are you willing to do this
I learned that I prevent habitat loss, protect species and reduce emissions just by following specific steps… Supporting sustainable agriculture, eating less meat, buying environmentally friendly products, conserving energy are just some of the ways to help saving the planet.
