Reflect on our trip to the UN. What did you think of your visit? Which speaker did you find the most inspiring and/or interesting and why? What surprised you the most about the experience? What did it feel like to be inside the UN to hear these conversations?
As an international student, being inside the UN was a privilege. I was surprised by the interior design of the chamber and by the fact that even the chairs were designed elaborately; they were light and mobile… The girl that spoke about her books really inspired me, the visuals that she had created were really appealing. They captured my attention I wanted to look into them. All in all, being in the UN was a one in a life time experience and actually listening my friends asking questions and sharing their thoughts impressed me. Being there as a community that give importance to environmental issues and to sustainable design was an amazing experience.
2 Post a digital file or documentation of your completed Systems Map/Model on your LP. AND bring a printed copy to class for presentation and crit.
3) Reflect on your process for the three Art + Science labs (kombucha, watercolor and natural dye). Post an image of all three projects in their completed form (your samples from each project’s process). Did your projects turn out as expected? What was it like to grown your own material (leather)? What vegetables/plants did you use as dye? What surprised you the most in the process of these projects? Which did you enjoy the most? Which was the most challenging? Will you continue to work with any of them in your future work? Bring your completed Natural Dye and Kombucha Leather projects to class for presentation next week. Please note for these presentations, these can simply be material samples (dyed samples and your sheet of “leather”). You do not need to turn these materials into other projects at this time.
Among the three art+science labs, making a natural dye out of plants was the most enjoyable and the most challenging lab. I chose to work with red cabbage to make my dye. I was really surprised by the fact that red cabbage turned into green when I mixed it with Soda Ash and turned into pink when I mixed it with Tartaric Acid. It was challenging because the process took so long and I needed to follow the instructions very carefully the avoid making any mistake. Overall, the dyes turned out as I expected and I was satisfied by the final product. Making a watercolor out of plants/fruits/ vegetables was fun as well. The most interesting part of that lab was observing the impact of honey and gum arabic on plants and also observing the change in opacity and intensity of the dyes over time. I worked with carrot, blueberry, pomegranate and basil. Pomegranate was the one that turned out as I expected; the color was vivid. On the other hand, carrot turned out more brownish than I thought.
Moreover, making a kombucha leather was also a great experience however I was disappointed due to not seeing any progression. Even though I checked out a heating mat from the making center and measured its PH level over and over again I couldn’t see any progression but a thin layer at the top. Nevertheless, It was a great experience.
