“Week 10: Know Your Zone + Social Resiliency”

  1. Reflect on our visit with Tattfoo. What kind of thoughts does his visit leave you with? Are you inspired by his work? How did his presentation connect to the themes of our class? 

I was really inspired by him and his way of addressing the realities of life and the solutions to increase social resiliency. When he talked about duality and absence of “we” and proved his claim by mentioning that white light going in to the prism on one side turns into spectrum of colors, my point of view on life has completely changed. In point of fact we are all one; all of are connected since we belong to same class and share the same air. To correlate this point of view with the themes of our class since we share the same earth, we need to pay more attention to environmental issues and to raise awareness on serious threats. We are all belong to a chain of being, bad use of environmental sources might result in fragmentation of the system.

I’m located in zone 5.

  • What does feels like to learn what zone you inhabit?

I feel prepared for the possibility of a hurricane evacuation. Learning my evacuation zone, is beneficial in terms of planing my destination and travel routes ahead of time.

  • How close is the next, nearest zone to your home?

zone 6 is one block away.

  • Which zone is Parsons located within?

Parsons is located in zone 6.

  • Do you feel prepared for a hurricane in NYC?

To be honest no, in fact I wasn’t aware of the risk of hurricane in NYC.

  • What are your thoughts on this website’s design (is it functional, aesthetic, easy to use etc.)? 

It is easy to understand, the use of visuals make it fun to explore the tabs.

4) Conduct independent research on Social Resiliency.

 

  • How does social resiliency differ from infrastructural and urban resiliency?

Urban resiliency is defined as “measurable ability of any urban system, with its inhabitants, to maintain continuity through all threats and stresses, while positively adapting and transforming towards sustainability”.Therefore, a resilient city plans and acts to prepare for and respond to hazards – natural and human-made, sudden and slow-onset, expected and unexpected. Social resiliency includes the acknowledgement of the importance of the roles played by power, politics, and participation in the context of approaching threats and surprises. Therefore social resiliency must be maintained to enhance urban resiliency.

  • How would you explain social resiliency to a friend or family member?

Social resilience is about social entities and their abilities to tolerate, absorb, cope with and adjust to environmental and social threats of various kinds.

  • Why might social resilience be important in the context of climate change?

It is important in order to understand how serious the topic is and to take precautions while scrambling with serious outcomes. 

  • How important do you think it is for artists/designers to consider and encourage resiliency among people in their work?

I think it is really important to designer to be well equipped when it comes to social resiliency, designers not only design products but also design cities and the fate of the cities. They have to foreshadow the possible upcoming threats and try to bring out designs that will prevent those hazardous outcomes. 

  • What is an experience you have had, or an object/design that you have, that you feel supports social resiliency in you?  (i.e. makes you feel stronger, connected to the earth or other people and prepared/capable of adapting to environmental change).How might creative people do this? 

I think all of my technological devices because I can make a research about any topic that comes to my mind by using my laptop/mobile phone. Also my laptop/mobile phone makes me able to be informed about daily topics and the issues that the we’ve been facing. For that, my laptop makes me feel stronger and equipped/ prepared about environmental issues. 

5) Conduct independent research about what scientists are predicting New York City will be like (weather, infrastructure, architecture, population etc.) in the year 2050 due to the effects of climate change. If you have trouble with your research, or the “featured story” links posted on this page.

  • How are these predictions different or similar to what you imagine the city will be like? What do you think can make a coastal city like New York more resilient? Include 2-3 citations of your research.

I haven’t thought of that serious results. When I read about heat-related deaths which is expected to increase and which had happened in In France in 2003 and resulted in 15,000 deaths, my concerns about the topic has increased. I’ve already aware of the seriousness of the issue however the devastating numerical values have shocked me.

  • We need to recover and rebuild those regions by bringing out innovative and sustainable design for urban planning. 
  • We need to maintain the ecologically based adaptation. We should find ways to coexist with forest ecosystem in more effective ways. Having forested areas is good in terms of absorbing storm water, we need to develop more ecosystem-based adaptations that are effective for the region. 
  • We need to come up with innovative engineering approaches. like innovative designs for subway grates. Right now we have open grates. We need to design and implement grates that close. We need to see what we can do with the tunnels, which is much more challenging. We need to think about drains.
