SUSTAINABLE SYSTEMS FINAL

-TIMELESS KOMBUCHA LEATHER EARRINGS-

I designed a pair of earrings. I decided to create it because I believe that jewelry pieces have sentimental value to people, such as a ring passed down from grandmother. While jewelry has always been a way to adorn the body, it also has significant meaning and symbolism. The meaning of jewelry varies based on the piece and materials used.

My hair of earrings will not lose its value over the next 50 years since it emphasizes the significance of sustainable design. While wearing the piece, the awareness of not harming the environment will make the user feel conscious. Also due to the simple and minimalist design, the pair earrings can be easily adapt to the trend of that time era. The function of it can be changed in to a  key chain, necklace pendant or into another decorative piece such as a bag or zipper accessory.

Thinking about changing planetary realities that are very likely to affect resource availability, using a kombucha leather would be really impactful in the context of protecting the environment. While combatting the environmentally-hazardous leather industry, which is considered to be among the most dangerous sources of toxic pollution, bringing out a design out of a kombucha culture would be a great way to produce more cruelty-free products. Kombucha leather is eco-friendly and biodegradable. No extra land, water, or pesticides are required to produce the material. Also since it is made by kombucha culture and contains symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast it can be re-produced/ re-designed by placing it into water and letting scoby to grow. Also I’m going to coat the leather with beeswax so that It will be durable in case of contacting with water.

In the context of environmental changes, using kombucha leather instead of an alternative material will lessen the fashion industry’s dependence on nonrenewable materials. Also it will lessen the Anthropocene’s harmful effects on environment.

I think my design fulfills the criteria of Long Life design, it is affordable, it can be turned into another object, it is simple with its design and it’s environmental friendly.
