- Read the following article “Designer Tom Dixon Unveils His ‘Secret’ Project With Ikea” (Links to an external site.) and write a reflection on how it connects with the themes of our class. How does it relate to your work this semester? Do you aspire towards similar practices in your final project? Does it change how you think about mass produced designs?
The Britisher designer, Tom Dixon designed the DELAKTIG platform with the contributions of IKEA. He invited 75 Master’s students from around the globe to contribute. What is interesting about the design of DELAKTIG is it is multi functional; it is something that can be mutated according to changing positions. “You could put on a lamp, a phone charger, a side table. You could raise or lower it, or put it on wheels. It can easily go from being a student bed to a really posh couch, and then back again when you have kids.” According to what’ve have learned about LONG LIFE DESIGN. His designs fulfills the criteria of long life design; DELAKTIG is durable and cheap in cost. Furthermore it has a beautiful enduring form that doesn’t threaten the environment. While designing my final project, I’ve paid attention to create something that is attractive in design and efficient in function. Also I’ve kept in mind that my design should be affordable, easy to be repaired and durable.

REPAIR / RESILIENCY STORY- (DRAFT)
In the aspect of jewelry, the design is really simple and would never be out of date. The function of it can be changed in to a key chain or into another decorative piece such as a bag accessory. Thinking about changing planetary realities that are very likely to affect resource availability, using a kombucha leather would be really impactful in the context of protecting the environment. While combatting the environmentally-hazardous leather industry, which is considered to be among the most dangerous sources of toxic pollution, bringing out a design out of a kombucha culture would be a great way to produce more cruelty-free products.
The repair of the object can be maintained by resewing since construction and connection between each piece are replaceable and fixable. Also it is possible to remake the leather since it contains living materials (microbes). The only thing that has to done is to enliven the SCOBY which is the kombucha culture.
