Bridge 1: Reflection – February 2019

  1. How did you choose the images that you visualized?

By breaking down my feelings and translating them into simple shapes and lines.

  1. How did you choose the medium you selected for each piece?

If I am given the choice or it is just me freely drawing, painting, etc I always stick to black and white. I love to focus on negative space and making things meaningful yet simple so I chose to do this in black and white acrylic paint. It is the most simple way to get a beautiful shape.

  1. How did you choose how to present the work?

I chose to create a 1/2 inch border around my 5 pieces so that when I hung them next to each other, left to right, the viewer could decide if this was one gigantic piece or five separate ones.

  1. How did you choose to connect/ or not connect the pieces to each other?

The images I created all have the same geometric shapes, colors and simplicity to them. Visually they are connected to one another.

  1. How did you feel (felt sense & emotional narrative) about presenting your writing – note keeping?

Anxious. The entire experience for me was anxiety inducing. To read back through my thoughts and notes gave me more anxiety than sitting and recording them did. To me, it is really scary to be so in touch with myself because we live in a generation of constant stimulation and don’t take that much time to ourselves to process.

  1. How did you feel (felt sense & emotional narrative) about showing your work?

I was nervous. This is normal to me because I have a lot of anxiety about public speaking, presentations, sharing my work, etc.

  1. How did it feel to have the DAI happen with you present?

After the first DAI critique I was much more at ease with presenting my work when my turn came. I am not sure why but I really enjoy the DAI form of critiquing art. It really gives an opportunity for you and the viewers to share what they see and notice before just saying “I don’t like this” or “I love this”. I gained a lot of really helpful feedback with the DAI and my work.

  1. How did you choose your questions for the audience/ viewers?

With all the pieces I really wanted to make sure I understood the artists intentions and meanings. I asked simple questions so I could try to see things in their eyes.

  1. What changes would you make to the work if you did another iteration?

I would make it bigger. I also really enjoyed the suggestion to look at my pieces with the black as the negative space and I am really interested to create something in the future with that kind of “mindset”.

  1. If there was something that you could have shared with your viewers to bring additional context or understanding, what would it be?

Probably how I see the meaning of each piece in my eyes portrayed by the shapes. How each shape and line really represents the word I chose for it.
