The Apothecary

The two prominent systems that govern this library involve an envelope of storage in the front and storage drawers at the back. The central core of the building can be further subdivided into spaces of activity that encompass both private and public spaces introducing the varying levels of privacy within the apothecary.

While our objective was to pick a program and relate it to the constructs of the site we were given, the first step was to identify the systems that would govern the functionality of the program. Having an apothecary it was clear that had an envelope of storage as well as storage drawers at the back.

Designing the vessels for storage and casting concrete as a study. The two materials represent each of the systems that govern the structure of the building.

Material Studies

By far one of the most explorative assignment of the semester. A study of two different materials coming together. With their hierarchy comes endless possibility. After creating the materials it was about looking at it with a different perspective capturing the significance in the relationship that the two materials share. Identifying them and then developing them as systems to build up on with our programs.

Below are representative drawings that represent the breakdown of the material study to identify the systems within it.

SPACIAL DEFINITIONS

These definitions represent my understanding of the spacial conditions that were introduced to us. These definitions allow me to examine the transition in my understanding from when it was first introduced to us till now. I believe that it is a continuous development in our understanding as we develop our spacial understanding.

At the end of this assignment I came to the realization that my definitions for envelope and vessel were conflicting and expressed the same notion of space. I later understood that while my definition for envelope definition for fit its description i had to rethink of the way in which i understood what a vessel was. I now view a vessel as a space with a continuous and proportional compression or expansion.

SYSTEMS OF SUPPORT

This assignment enabled us to focus on a set of rules that would govern the individual pieces to come together to create a magnificent construct of support.

We began by a rapid process of prototyping to then narrow it down to three iterations.

After making the three iterations I then proceeded to develop my third iteration in such a manner that it fulfilled the requirement of being a system that grew along the x, y and z axis in the most effective manner providing the puzzle pieces with the most amount of stability and support.

Design Studio 1, Assignment 1.1

Assignment 1.1 made us follow the movement of each of the six distinct pieces of the burr puzzle. The six pieces are related to one another in a precise manner and come together in a seamless way to form a definite structure.

1.1 A  Print

Part A of Assignment 1.1 consists of a photographic sequence of the burr puzzle tracing its assembly as well as its deconstruction.

1.1 B  img008  Part B consists of the plans and elevations of each of the six pieces of the puzzle (on Bristol and mylar) as well as an axonometric drawing of the most prominent side.

1.1 C     img003

Above was my first attempt at recreating the assembly of the puzzle. It was an attempt to represent each of the six parts coming together to make a whole.

With a final representation of my analytical drawing the acute verbs contribute towards the movements within the analytical drawing.

Space and Materiality

IMG_8281 IMG_8286  IMG_8317IMG_8289

With the use of plaster I took moulds of the palm of my hand allowing for the distinct lines of my palm to be traced. While these abstract renditions float over the mystical and illusion of light, they symbolise the profound journey of our existence, our past. The abstract cloudy moulds oscillate from up above casting a stark shadow over our past. These looming bodies are dense and  symbolise the future- the unknown. The future always obscures our understanding of the past and this piece thus presents itself to be a sphere of mutability blending in all the sphere of life and time into a realm that to us will forever be left unknown.

Studio Final

For my final studio project, I decided to install a public art work at my site. The sculpture comprises of plastic bottles that have been deformed by virtue of a heat gun. The piece also comprises of a facial human element (made out of plaster) that represents the role of individuals in the waste disposal system. We constantly contribute to the inflows of the system and it is thus a humanistic element that is a reflection of ourselves. The site is the Concrete Plant Park located in the South Bronx. The park in itself is a restored structure from the concrete plant which once occupied the site. The Parks Department formed a partnership with community organisations including Bronx River Alliance to design and construct the park.

The piece is meant to interact with all the elements in the park blending into its landscape. While the bright colours are symbolic of the environmental implications of pollutants leak into the groundwater and soil, they also help to attract the attention of children who speak for a whole new generation (this is the philosophy of my community group Coqui the Chef)

Photo Book (The Waste Disposal System)

IMG_8149 IMG_8150

My photo book comprises of a series of images that visually represent my system. While some images capture trash on the streets of NYC and its relation with us on a daily basis, other images trace the historical elements of the system. The exercise also allowed me to  trace my way down to the archives from the mid 90’s to study the evolution of the system.
