The Apothecary

The two prominent systems that govern this library involve an envelope of storage in the front and storage drawers at the back. The central core of the building can be further subdivided into spaces of activity that encompass both private and public spaces introducing the varying levels of privacy within the apothecary.

While our objective was to pick a program and relate it to the constructs of the site we were given, the first step was to identify the systems that would govern the functionality of the program. Having an apothecary it was clear that had an envelope of storage as well as storage drawers at the back.

Designing the vessels for storage and casting concrete as a study. The two materials represent each of the systems that govern the structure of the building.

Material Studies

By far one of the most explorative assignment of the semester. A study of two different materials coming together. With their hierarchy comes endless possibility. After creating the materials it was about looking at it with a different perspective capturing the significance in the relationship that the two materials share. Identifying them and then developing them as systems to build up on with our programs.

Below are representative drawings that represent the breakdown of the material study to identify the systems within it.

SPACIAL DEFINITIONS

These definitions represent my understanding of the spacial conditions that were introduced to us. These definitions allow me to examine the transition in my understanding from when it was first introduced to us till now. I believe that it is a continuous development in our understanding as we develop our spacial understanding.

At the end of this assignment I came to the realization that my definitions for envelope and vessel were conflicting and expressed the same notion of space. I later understood that while my definition for envelope definition for fit its description i had to rethink of the way in which i understood what a vessel was. I now view a vessel as a space with a continuous and proportional compression or expansion.

SYSTEMS OF SUPPORT

This assignment enabled us to focus on a set of rules that would govern the individual pieces to come together to create a magnificent construct of support.

We began by a rapid process of prototyping to then narrow it down to three iterations.

After making the three iterations I then proceeded to develop my third iteration in such a manner that it fulfilled the requirement of being a system that grew along the x, y and z axis in the most effective manner providing the puzzle pieces with the most amount of stability and support.
