Lucky number seven
Growing up, I’ve always had a good amount of people to look up to including my parents and of course, my four siblings. My family has shaped me into the creative person I am today. I have to admit, I’ve always felt a bit out of place in this athletic family. Growing up, I played soccer and did gymnastics for a long time of my life but eventually lost interest in playing these sports and didn’t want to continue playing in high school like my other siblings chose to. My oldest brother was a well known high school basketball player who led his team to state finals for a number of years. My sister was a volleyball legend who also led her team to finals and my two other brothers both played basketball, baseball and football.
With all of these expectations going into high school, I really had no interest in playing a sport like the rest of my siblings so I took a different route and experimented with art and wood shop classes. At first, my parents weren’t really interested because they really didn’t know much about art and wood shop. But after seeing a few of my projects after three years of taking these classes, including a bowl, vase and chair all made of wood, they fell in love with the idea of me finding a passion different than my siblings. Not only did it impress my parents and siblings, it made me feel capable of so many things. If it weren’t for the support and love from my family and siblings, I wouldn’t have taken a different route and discovered what I am truly capable of.
