For my final skin swatches, I used brown, green and yellow thread to represent my chosen skin, a pineapple. I’ve created a diamond like shape and sewed it onto two sewn pieces of muslin.
For these swatches, I experiemented by adding different threads and yarn to see how everything would tie in together.
The final swatch includes detail to represent the pineapple skin by using brown, light yellow and green. The materials used are located below.
Throughout the process, I learned different weaving techniques and how I can incorporate different materials into the work. I enjoyed the weaving process even though it was difficult to create the exact design I wanted. But because of the practice with working on different swatches, I learned the different styles I was able to do. If I were to continue with this textile, I would create a larger piece with more detail on the little things such as the hidden weaving techniques and colors.
A classmates work that I particularly appreciated was Jane’s peanut skin swatches. Unfortunately, I do not have any photos of her work but I really enjoyed how much work and detail she put in to create such complex yet perfectly representing her chosen skin. Each of her swatches had different looks and shapes yet they all came back to representing her originally skin. Her presentation of the swatches was also very pleasing to look at, as she placed her work onto a black background to really emphasize the detail and colors she used.
Here are the final pieces below.
