Throughout this project, I learned how to work with different textile techniques such as embroidery, natural dye, and a three-dimensional technique. I learned the importance and patience required to work with these techniques and the efforts I have to put into the work to create my desired design. I enjoyed embroidery the most because it was mesmerizing to watch the design come to life and almost therapeutic to do. I found embroidery the most important to me because there are specific details to add with each thread and design and with exploring and experimenting during the process, I succeeded to do so. I found the natural dyeing most challenging because it was hard to get the exact color combination without using toxic materials but it was a fun experience and I would definitely love to work with natural dye again, I think I would just have to experiment with the different combinations to get the results I want. If I continued to work with natural dye, I would keep exploring different methods to achieve my exact color desired.
This embroidered piece is inspired by my original chosen skin, pineapple.
This swatch was created to represent the colors of a pineapple. The technique used is shibori natural dyeing with spinach.
The third swatch was made to represent the texture of a pineapple. For this, I used a boiling method by twisting parts throughout the fabric and attaching clothespins and then boiling the fabric for 30 minutes then set the swatch out to dry with the clothespins still attached to keep the shape.
