Food Self-Portrait

For this assignment I chose to make a clay out of baking soda, cornstarch, and water as the base of my self-portrait. I then stuck candy into the face, as seen below. I chose to use candy because I am drawn to bright colors in my artwork and also have a huge sweet tooth. I mounted the portrait onto cereal boxes to give the project more stability and color.

I then chose to add ears and earrings made out of the same clay material to symbolize my love fore earrings as well as give the portrait more character. I then waited for the clay to dry before painting it with watered-down food coloring.

I would say that I am overall happy with the way the piece turned out. I am not very experienced in sculpture or 3D work in general, so it was definitely a challenge. At first I thought I would be bothered by the color bleeding provided by the candy, as well as the cracking of the clay, but after seeing it all finished I think they both add to it.

The finished piece is shown below.
