Sustainable Systems Final

YI/YI Project Statement:

I am lucky enough to call both Chicago and New York City my home, therefore I am used to being in large cities and it has stood out to me the lack of green spaces in urban spaces. If we could increase the amount of green space in urban environments, we could improve a city’s overall mental and physical health, and even potentially decrease violence. Unfortunately, large cities are prone to sidewalks and cement more than they are parks and natural reserves. In addition, the parts of the cities that do have access to public green spaces are usually quite wealthy. Studies show that people with higher education and larger incomes have better access to open green spaces than those lower on the socioeconomic scale. Having access to nearby trees and vegetation can lead to less violence, improved air quality, reduced levels of stress, and overall better mental and physical health. By finding a way to build more parks and outdoor green areas, we can therefore not only improve the health of each individual citizen, but also decrease levels of violence in major cities. We all know that environment can shape human behavior in many different ways. The youth of our cities deserve to know that there is a place that they can call their own, to laugh and play, and to not have to fear anything in- this place could be a green space. My object is a PSA to promote the awareness of this issue and inspire change to bring more green spaces into urban environments.
