Wire Hand Holding an Object

In this assignment, we were asked to create a hand out of wire that would be capable of holding an item of our choice. I used 19 gauge annealed wire after finding it pleasant to work with during portrait project. My goal in this sculpture was to mimic a contour drawing of a hand. I wanted to preserve the graphic nature of the lines and use the wire to “draw” a hand. As a result, I created the entire sculpture out of a single piece of wire. The two connections where the ends of the wire are are on the top and bottom of the wrist. Another aspect of this piece that I paid special attention to was the definition of details such as the fingernails and the creases and wrinkles in the skin around the joints of the fingers. The object that the hand was meant to hold is a scarf given to me by my mother when I was a little girl. However, the pattern of the scarf made the image of the hand difficult to see. The hand would be better displayed if I had used plainer fabric.
