Visual Culture Diptych Reflection

I am exploring materiality and the relationship between vision and fashion. Here are my first 7 Diptych explorations :

My Two favorites so far are these two:

(1) Fashion photography.

  • What conversation happened between each image in this diptych?

The details of each image compliment each other nicely because the pieces within the photographs are consistent.

  • How was the medium selected successful at supporting the content of your object, form, or image? (if it was not as successful as others, why?)

I originally wanted to explore the way fashion communicates and the materiality of it so I can better understand the way it can be interpreted with different people.

  • How did the materiality (medium used) affect the content or meaning of the individual artworks?

I went to Fashion Week to find some of the coolest materials in what people were wearing. I then cropped them to have the materials speak for themselves.

  • What did you learn about your content through this medium exploration?

I definitely need to dig deeper on the subject; however, I love how the images came out and the way it shows fashion as a medium of self expression and individuality.

  • How did the medium you used change the context of your object, form, or image?

The images on their own do not necessarily prove my idea on accessibility in fashion. I did feel that I needed to further research the way that material communicates before going further within my original topic.

  • What websites / books / museums / galleries / other artists did you research during this process for ideas and inspiration?

I researched the way blind people experience the world via Refinery29 and web articles. I also studied style within the walls of New York Fashion Week.

Regarding the whole process:

  • How does this experiment shift your overall thesis question?

I know that I want to expand my thesis and really narrow in on the way fashion and vision connect.

(2) Paper cut-outs.

  • What conversation happened between each image in this diptych?

I tried to use color theory and contrast to abstract materiality.

  • How was the medium selected successful at supporting the content of your object, form, or image? (if it was not as successful as others, why?)

I wanted to keep the form abstract to pull in the viewer.

  • How did the materiality (medium used) affect the content or meaning of the individual artworks?

It created my topic in a more broad way. I want to explore materiality for the vision impaired a bit more and refine these fine-art diptychs so they communicate nicer with my message and fashion photography.

  • What did you learn about your content through this medium exploration?

i learned to think about material in a more abstract way. Further exploration is needed for me to relate this more to fashion and the way people interact with it.

  • How did the medium you used change the context of your object, form, or image?

It created a less concise idea of my broad fashion topic; however, the idea is not communicated clearer by using this technique.

It made me think more about what is materiality and what is the interaction/experience of materiality.
