Thesis/Concept Statement – Alyssa

While browsing through social media platforms for hours on end, it is often that we are unaware of the effects that they have on us. YouTube, a major streaming platform, is home to all sorts of content, whether it be music videos, food reviews, gaming screen caps, or makeup tutorials. One of the major YouTube communities that has developed over time, is the beauty blogger community. These videos tend to consist of clothing hauls, daily vlogs, makeup tutorials, or weekly outfits. Specifically targeting teenage girls, this type of content may provide helpful advice, although it can promote unhealthy buying habits. YouTubers are depicted showing bags of clothes, candles, and makeup, all while suggesting that their audience should buy it as well. What does impact does this have on their young and impressionable viewers?

In this research paper, I will highlight the underlying issues with these YouTube videos and how they promote consumerism to masses. I will discuss, interview, and survey different people within this targeted audience, to see if these videos prove to have a negative influence on viewers. This will provide me with further insight to my study, along with several reputable sources.

Topic- Alyssa

The topic I chose was the recent defunding of Planned Parenthood in several states along with the “gag rule” preventing safe and legal abortions. This is a major issue because it not only prevents women from having safe abortions, but also prevents millions of patients from receiving accessible health care. This is so frustrating to me because this administration feels as though they have a right to police women’s bodies and limit anyone from their health care rights. There is a negative stigma about Planned Parenthood and that they “promote abortions,” meanwhile abortions only make up 2% of their provided services. Their other services include: STI/HIV testing/treatment, pregnancy testing, forms of contraception, sex education, cancer screenings, and primary care. Removing Planned Parenthood will not end abortions, it will only end safe ones.

Project Statement- Alyssa

My project is creating a tote bag with an embroidered/painted design that represents the interconnectivity of my site, which is my local public library. The text will read “am New York” which is taken from my sketch (and also a picture taken while at the library) and also gives context to the space and how it is used. This is particularly inspired by the morning or “am” life of the library. For the image I will create a rainbow open book to show the main source of connection and the vibrancy of the books within the space.

Favorite Images – Alyssa

I picked these three pictures from my self portrait/identity pictures, which I feel are representative of me. The things included in all three of these images are my everyday essentials. The first picture I took while waiting for the bus (I liked how the sun was hitting the stop.) It shows my favorite sweater, necklace and scarf. I’m also holding my water bottle that I bring everywhere and am wearing a usual puffer jacket. The second picture I took while in the UC library cause I’m usually there between classes throughout the week. I’m wearing converse, Levi’s and have a copy of Just Kids in my lap. I read in my free time, so this is a usual part of my everyday routine. The last picture I took right before a class started because I was cold and still had my jacket on inside, which was funny to me.

Alyssa’s Oral History Excerpt

Dilara: What are you most looking forward to in life? That’s a big question…

Alyssa: In life? Um.. Definitely accomplishing goals I have for myself… doing things I’ve always wanted to do: traveling, getting an internship, hopefully getting my dream job, just things I’ve always wanted… I’m just excited, like I’m ready for anything..

Dilara: Awww

In Class Collage: Alyssa

This collage consists of a lot of things that represent me as a whole and my personality. I cut around my pictures to focus on the main subjects, and I added scattered drawings/words because it’s a daily habit of mine. I added small/humorous captions to my pictures or what I thought when I looked at them.

Alyssa’s Artist Breakfast

This is my artist breakfast, a cup of green tea and a banana. I usually don’t have much time in the morning, so I usually stick to something simple for breakfast. (Queens, NY , 7:00 am)

This is my best friend Nicoletta’s breakfast, an everything bagel with cream cheese and water. She is away at college and has time in the morning to make herself her favorite breakfast foods. (Buffalo, NY , 9:00 am)
