Lea Lublin was born in Poland in 1929, but was raised in Argentina. She started her career as a painter and later moved on to making large scale installations consisting of modern ideas. In the 1970’s she became part of a movement that used art as a form of dialogue to question the viewers on themes about art and feminism. So she would write questions on large pieces of cloth about art and feminism, creating a conversation between her art and the viewers. This is why her piece “Interrogations sur l’art, discourse sur l’art (Interrogations into Art, Discourse on Art)” caught my attention during the exhibition: Transmissions: Art in Eastern Europe and Latin America, 1960–1980 at the MoMa. This piece is a set of questions about: What is Art?
During our Studio and Seminar classes we have been questioning the idea of “self” and what it really is. So the fact that the piece of art is a set of questions seemed really interesting to me, and it reminded me of the idea of “Self”. Having this in mind, I started to question myself while visualizing the piece, but instead of using the word Art, I used “Self”. For example: “ Is Self a system of signs?” “Is Self an illusion?” and so forth. The idea that the art spoke to me and really made me think about “self” and “identity”, I felt a connection.
What I also liked about this piece is that it is very clean, simple, joyful and to the point. I feel that her goal was to communicate an idea with the result of having different opinions and she achieved it. Because Art can mean different things to different people, as well as the idea of “Self”.
