For this assignment, I had to choose 4 personal objects and one 3-D object in the city that I felt connected with. For my four personal objects, I chose a pair of my favorite shoes, red embroidered booties, two of my favorite bracelets that were hand-made in El Salvador, a blue bag that was also hand-made in Guatemala by artisans and a ring that says the “Our Father Prayer” around it, that my mother gave to me. Each and every piece is unique and special to me in its own way. For the city object, I chose the Union Square subway station because I feel that it is part of my home and where I live now.
For my contour drawing, I wanted to make it fun and magical, so I played with the embroideries of my shoe to create movement and rhythm. I also decided to slant the Union Square Subway Station to the left to make it more interesting and to follow the movement. I maintained the line weight very delicate to create a cleaner aesthetics.
For my positive and negative drawing, I decided to slightly change the composition of my objects, still leaving the slanted union square station to create movement as well. Personally, I liked the contour drawing the most because It is more eccentric and interesting, rather than the positive and negative that is flatter.
For my value drawing, I worked with a variety of shapes in illustrator and used the pathfinder tool to create a sort of abstract piece. I also played with line wight and line color to create contrast. At first, I thought I was doing it all wrong, because I couldn’t understand my drawings behind, but I really liked how it turned out in the end. I feel that it is a very intricate design with a lot of personality. I really enjoyed using Adobe Illustrator and becoming more familiar with the program.
For my last piece, the mixed media collage, I used some craft paper, thread, newspaper, and cut outs to create a mixed media / collage version of my value drawing. I had a lot of fun working with different materials and cutting out from my actual piece. I decided to make it very simple and not add as much to the actual piece, but instead cut out from it to create more negative space.
Overall, I really enjoyed this project and I am happy with my results.
