Statement

The purpose of this assignment was to use a pair of discarded jeans and transform it into something that represents your own interpretation of Americana Culture. At the beginning of this assignment, I was completely lost and I honsestley did not know what to do. I consider my style to be very eclectic, so I knew I wanted to make something different, yet meaningful. Through the process, I had the privilege to traveled to Antigua Guatemala and got completely inspired by the beauty that exists within its culture. Culture is to me a muse of sorts, because no one would think to combine colors in such way as the Mayan Artisans, so unexpected and beautiful at the same time. I was born in Miami, but grew up in El Salvador and I’ve  always been inspired by Central American Culture. With this in mind, I started to realize that I could use the Mayan handcrafted fabrics combined with American Denim to create a piece that would contrast two hard working cultures.

I decided to represent this idea by making a cross body convertible clutch with a bohemian and artisanal look using tassels, patches of mayan fabric and pieces of dark and light denim. The purpose of this piece is to give women the privilege to experience what it feels like to have a combination of both Central American and Americana hard working Cultures in a modern and youthful design concept. The bold black lines, geometric shapes and vivid colors of the Mayan hand crafted fabrics combined with the dark and light denim influenced me to create a collection that truly reflects who I am: a passionate designer filled with inspiration from my ancestry, purposed to design “living” accessories for all women including my beloved Salvadoran senoras and senoritas.

Reading Blue Jeans:

In his article Blue Jeans, Fred Davis states: “A critical feature of this cultural breakthrough is, of course, blue jeans identity change from a garment associated with work and hard work at that to many of the symbolic attributes of leisure: ease, comfort, casualness, sociability, and the outdoors.” The transformation of blue jeans could be considered one of the most remarkable changes in fashion history. What I admire the most, is that denim has become a fabric that has allowed people from different parts of the world and different cultures put their own twist to it, as I did. “Fashion is capable of much grater subtlety, more surprises, more anxious backward glances and searching forward gazes than we credit it with.” said Fred Davis in his “Blue Jeans” article, I believe that this is just the beginning of fashion, and that it will continue to fill this world with surprises.
