Personal Bio
This is Sally Xi. I am in fashion design. I think human itself is the most fascinating subject in society after all. This is the reason I chose fashion design, a field that is most closely related to people. I have been more interested in personal and emotional designs rather than realistic ones. Therefore the Bridge four–redesign of monument–is a bit challenging for me.
Project Statement
Our project is a redesign of the Christopher Columbus monument at Columbus circle. Our purpose of the redesign is to present the full story of Columbus objectively, instead of glorifying him, which is the original monument dose.
Planning
There is one theme that ran through our bridge 3 and bridge 4, that is getting people’s attention to the history rather than focusing the appearance of the monument. We found the lack of interest in history from the interviews we have done for bridge 3.
People shared their experience and story to us about the location. There is a Korean guy proposed to his wife in-front of the monument. However when we asked him why he chose this location, there is no specific reason. For him the Columbus circle is a beautiful place for hanging out with family. It does not matter who Columbus is. None of our interviewees talked about the monument itself. We tried asking people what they think about the monument, but the answer we got was “it needs some cleaning”.
The problem of not caring about the meaning behind the monument came across almost all of the groups. However ours is even more serious. Since what people can see from the ground is only the base of the monument. Columbus being way up in the air is making people less interested in knowing who he is. It is also a common issue comes to appreciating art works. No one wants to read the meaning behind the art piece. The voice of the artists cannot be heard.
Outcome
This is the Venn diagram we did for seminar class based on our research. The diagram presents the similarity and differences on four monuments. The three of our group members are each responsible of researching on one monument, plus the one we are doing redesign on.
