Drawing & Imaging Value/Figure Composition

The figure drawing unit was personally the most challenging unit so far. Leading up to this final piece, the sessions of figure drawing were very confusing to me and I didn’t really understand much about how to draw the human form at all. I kept practicing and practicing but it seemed that the only drawings that I sorta liked were the ones that took a bit longer of time, the one, two and five minute figure drawings were essentially just scribbles of curves and poorly proportioned body parts. I did though, find aspects I enjoyed from my drawings that took a little more time. After the 1 hour session, I was semi-confident in the piece I had drawn. I saw that I developed the ability to get proportions a little better, and that I was able to shade and correctly add value around the model.

With this piece, and our past greyscales that we created, they were combined into one final piece.

I decided that the top row, my hand drawn values, looked like the cross hatching style of drawing and I thought that would be more interesting than the photos to use. In Illustrator, I made all of these into patterns then sheets of patterns to create the final piece. I also cropped my original image in to focuc on the upper body and top of the legs, because thats where I felt I added values best.

I think that I was one of the rare occurrences where I didn’t exactly like my drawing, but I really like my final project. I feel as if it’s very stylized towards what I was trying to achieve from the beginning, and I overall like how it looks a lot. I’m very happy with it.
