Creative Process
Deciding on a word proved to be the hardest part. I initially thought of doing “celestial” and doing a watercolor piece to challenge myself; however, I didn’t feel passionate about my chosen word. I switched then to “ethereal” and doing a collage series but found it hard to produce an image that I was satisfied with. Here is a photo of a collage I had in mind while using this word:
I eventually decided to change my vocabulary yet again when I wasn’t connecting with my collages. So, I finally chose the word “eccentric” for my Triptych. It means “unconventional and slightly strange”. When I hear the word, I think of disco, bohemian, bright, colorful, florals, hippie, so I played upon that. I intended to create a playful mood with strange characters within the works.
Beginning Sketches of Middle Piece
Final Series
Trunked
Here we see a feminine face on a muscular male arm while also sporting an elephant trunk. Society is at their feet in disarray because it cannot comprehend the strangeness. Godzilla (bottom left) seems to get it, however. Yet I find the character to be beautiful and I admire their goofy side seeing their tongue out! Also, that’s Prince William’s ear you see.
Collective Femme Power
Here we see feminine figures connecting at the top half of the piece, showing how important it is we must support one another. The men are at the feet in awe of the beauty. Hannah Hoch’s “Coquette” is a piece that constantly inspires me when creating collages she’s brilliant. Society is yet again at the bottom of the image, judging.
Romanticize My Hopeless Music
This was my first piece of the series I created, before this I was looking at a blank canvas hoping to find inspiration to create something, ANYTHING. I find that my creative process works best when I don’t plan and just cut out what I am drawn to visually and metaphorically, I actually picked my word out once I finished this collage. The disco man which I got from my Stevie Nicks magazine, I’m eighty percent sure that’s Mick Fleetwood you see at the top of the building. He’s glowing as he expresses his authenticity through music, an artist. Society is there judging, still. They are dull, disapproving as their brother lives a happy life. He dedicates his life to using his craft of music to spread joy. I would hope to visit the planet he’s on one day.
I loved this project. I find myself growing as a better artist with every project I do. I am so grateful for this class and Professor Stillman as both have been helping me so much develop my creative process!
