Sivananda, The Sustainable & Healing Practice of Traditional Yoga

Project Syllabus by Prof. Chelsea Limbird:
“The etymology of ‘define’ leads to understanding the word as fixed, agreed upon, and established. In a final work, one may develop a ‘sustainable’ definition for a ‘system’. We will define ‘sustainable systems’ with open definitions that can evolve and change with time and energy, as necessary, responding to circumstances, environments and culture.”

I chose to investigate the system of traditional yoga, more precisely the practice of Sivananda Yoga. To view the E-Book I created click HERE or the link below, continue to read this post if you’d like to further understand my research and development.

What elements and orders exist within the current framework of the system you are defining?
There already exist yoga studios accessible to many cities and their citizens; however, studios might not be as common in rural areas. Online classes are available and free of charge if one has internet access. If somebody wants to do extensive research, titles and other resources are available to use for study. One can create an individual flow if they’ve been consistent in their yoga practice.

What elements are open and flexible?
You take your breath with you everywhere your body goes, the two essential factors of yoga; however, having a preferable space that’s open for movement might not be as accessible. Home is a simple place to start, or going outdoors and connecting with nature is another brilliant idea. However, during the winter months, outdoor practices wouldn’t be as easy. One can do yoga in a studio surrounded by other people or by oneself while being guided by a video or the individual if they have the confidence.
Another variable could be physical injury or limitations. If one cannot do some positions, it could prove not easy, but many variations exist and can accommodate various needs.

How can you, as a designer, create a sustainable definition for this system?
Creating a small, easily accessible, tangible visual can spread awareness and motivation for the viewer to practice mindfulness. Many don’t know the origins of yoga, and it could be of benefit to understand the ancient scriptures telling of the impact yoga can have on the physical and emotional human body. I will also make it simple and an easy read with colorful illustrations to keep the viewer engaged.

What is the present of this system?
Modern yoga practices have been adapted after Indian monks began spreading their knowledge to the western world. Now, it’s a more common term and form of movement around the globe. However, I don’t think there’s enough education surrounding the advantages of a routine yoga workout. There’s also a certain stigma and stereotype to those who do yoga that I think needs to shift. Swami Vivekananda introduced yoga to the west as a “science of the mind,” and he certainly has the right idea.

What is the future of this system?
I see yoga becoming more of an everyday practice and a form of exercise in the following decades. As people are becoming more aware of how important it is to treat their bodies with love, they realize the impact of mindfulness. It can improve moods, create blood flow, relieve stress, improve sleep, alleviate gastrointestinal difficulties, and several other positive results on the mind, body, and soul.

What are the elements of this system?
The two forever constant elements are the breath and the body. An open enough space for movement is needed; however, it’s not a huge limitation. Also, time for completing a session without feeling rushed is another component.

What systems does this system interact/insect with?
The art of yoga is not just the physical movement of the body. Focus on the breath and where you feel muscular responses are two things that can help bring awareness to the present moment. Mantras are melodic phrases to channel frequency within the body to adjust all aspects of your being and penetrate the unconscious mind. Mindfulness, physical exercise, and meditation are other systems that interact with yoga.

What are the different variables within the system?
One of the different variables within yoga is the postures one moves throughout their practice; the bends and twists of the body. Any physical injuries are another variable that could affect somebody’s yoga practice. If somebody has breathing issues, that could be another limit to completing a restorative yoga practice.

What is constant in the system?
A constant within yoga is the breath and body. Mind, body, and spirit remain with an individual for their entire life; that is what makes mindful disciplines so beneficial. One can incorporate varied breathwork techniques or physical movements to help them become more aware of the present moment and how the heart feels.

What is your role as an individual in this system?

As an individual in yoga, I can continue to learn more information on the practice and grow my confidence in discovering my vinyasa flows. I can also spread awareness so that others can discover the healing powers of yoga.

What is the role of the community in this system?
The community’s role is to practice yoga daily and continue to be present in their daily lives. Yoga goes beyond the mat, and one can bring the shifted perspectives that are revealed underneath the surface. In life, like your postures, obstacles can be opportunities, and one must learn to be flexible to move toward liberation.

What are you interested in producing work about this system?
I am very interested in discovering more about yoga and the benefits of mindfulness. It’s fascinating how quieting the mind and moving the body slowly with the breath can create so much conscious peace. I have only just begun my mindfulness journey, and I owe these practices all my gratitude because they have helped so much with mental blockages and other issues I’ve struggled with my whole life. I now get restful sleep, feel energized throughout the day, and look forward to a new day and getting an opportunity to grow while incorporating yoga into my daily routine.
