6 avataric self portraits

In this assignment, we were asked to create self-avatar portraits of our past, present and future that represent our identity. My Avatars are about self-image and an evolution of mind in my past, present and future. For the past, I chose to use paints, hand gesture and body position to represent my attempt to hide up my insecurities. In the present, I confront my fears, and I am more confident in myself and less concerned about others’ view. I used makeup to enhance and exaggerate my insecurities, hence the acne, dark circles, blackheads and pores. The future is an anticipation of myself —-fully confident, bold, colorful and fun.

In the three stages, I used blue water and balloon to tie the avatars together. As both objects exist in the “past” avatars (image3), blue water is a representation of depression and fear while balloon symbolizes joy. In the “present” stage, I flush the blue water down the drain (image 5), and ultimately surround by balloons in the “future” stage.
