Integrative Studio 2: Fashion – LP WK 3/ Fabric Manipulation Submission & Reflection

1) Beach Waves & Undulated tucks

The inspiration is connected to the square fabric because of the “waves” that it forms from the shadows. The waters have a smooth, wavy structure that makes it aesthetically pleasing to see as the shadows move back and forth.

2) Paint splotches and Quilting

The paint splotches reminded me of bumps on a flat surface when dried. I decided to stitch two pieces of muslin with cotton to form a bubbly, trapped, look that would give depth into the circular stitched forms.

3) Buildings and Cross Pin tucks

The architecture of the buildings – specifically apartments, were similar in structure to the muslin fabric when I was making “windows”.

4) Too Faced Blush and “Hidden” Embroidery

I used the idea of powder going into the air from the Too Faced Blush powder product, into making the “Hidden” embroidery as it can hold a more than just one physical, viewable form.

5) Landscape and Flower

I loved the imagery of flowers in the landscape and took the inspiration into making a flower in muslin, taking pieces apart to put them back together.

6) Nail Polish and Slashed Tucks

The inspiration of nail polish came to nails, and nail color samples, inspiring me to do slashed tucks (representing nails).

Write Up:

Reflect on the readings you have completed in seminar.  How have the readings influenced your ideas on beauty?  Illustrate one place in your project where your making process relates to the seminar reading/ discussion. (One Paragraph)

The readings influenced my ideas on beauty in a way where I am looking for beauty in more of a personal, understanding stance than I used to. I always perceived beauty as this mainstream movement and form, and I am trying to get away from those mainstream ideas as they may get/become distorted. What I find beautiful may be beautiful to me, but different from others. While finding inspiration and trying to manipulate fabrics from inspiration photos, I decided to go within my own path and make my own definition of what I think beauty is, completing my job as the artist – to represent my thoughts and experiences. These objects and my artwork are representations of my attempt in trying to be my own ideals in beauty and perfection.
