Intro To Fashion Studies: Lecture/Recitation LP Post #5

Fashion to me, is an aspect of an art of living. Since the beginning of the semester, I learned that there is much more than to just people and society wanting to dress a certain way without much meaning. Subcultures are formed, and people are categorized based on the way they dress. Fashion affects more than the youth and young adult age, and is as important to the older generations as it is to the newer generations. It is revolutionary, and represents a movement. It is cultural, accepting, disorienting, but at the same time, brings people together. As stated, “Fashion is not a thing or a essence. Rather, it is a social process of negotiation and navigation through the murky yet-hopeful waters of what is yet to come.” (Kaiser 9). At first, I would think that fashion would be for the aesthetic, and I was more judgemental on people who didn’t share similar aesthetics than I did. In this sense, I thought that it was essential or needed to have such aesthetic or way of dress, or else I would consider them as something that is not in the current trends or standards. I have become a lot more open to peoples opinions on clothing, as well as the way they dress, by being more accepting and open-minded, considering their choices of dress, whether it be cultural, social, or feeling.
