The Danish Girl

Lilly’s entire life was a performance. While living as a man she would perform and portray a masculine role for those around her. Society forces people to take on such roles due to the fear of being judged and or ridiculed. She wore a costume that consisted of suits, button-down shirts and slacks, the typical attire for a male in that time period.

You can be true to the character all you want but you’ve got to go home with yourself.

Lilly mastered the art of betrayal. She knew when it was time to perform as a male and or female and was willing to master everything it entailed. The characters she performed where individuals that fit societal standards, but the real Lilly was nothing close to that. She managed to break character only once in the scene when she was with the gentleman at the party. The transition between to the fake to the real was so overwhelming for her that she became physically ill. At that moment Lilly was breaking out of the fake.
