Finding Identity
SJ: Some people considers that artists and designers could lose their values, that means that follow making profit or do your own way. I think almost all designers could be in trouble with this question. How would you show your value in the future? How do you want to be as a designer?
Jun: I want to have my own style. Of course, it is better to have your own style for a designer. And the more important thing is that we need to show our special creation by using some individuality. But the truth is that no matter what, we need to start from copy to develop to create. it is really necessary to follow this pattern.
SJ: Starting copy doesn’t sound keeping your own way.
SJ: You mean making a copy can create something?
Jun: What I mean by copy is the basic process that people learn to create. For instance, first, you want to draw a portrait, but you are lacking in skills, so we generally will completely imitate other artists’ work. And after a while you start to change some gestures of people in the picture. Finally, when you master how to correctly draw a portrait you start to build your own style. That is the process of learning which is irreversible.
SJ: It sounds understandable.
SJ: What about your identity? Making a copy for basic process sounds like your basic process doesn’t come from your identity. How do you explain about this?
Jun: In the basic process, I can reflect my own style. It will be my challenge. I found that I wanted to do and now I’m finding how I can reflect my identity in my works.
SJ: I know, I think designers should reflect their identity and that will be always million dollar question.
SJ: Sometimes people lose their identity what they want to do how they want to be. You may have specific experiences in process to choose your way. Have you ever lost your identity? Or did you find your way?
Jun: Yes, I have. When I was young I have nothing to worry about my future, I chose my major just because the major was popular in the university. And later on I found out that it was not my interest. After my friends and parents encourage me, I decided to take a step to do what I want to do. As I said I need to start from copy, in my experience, choosing my major which was popular in the university helps to me being communication designer. Fashion design became my basic process to be communication design because at least, I realized treating fabric wasn’t my way. As a result, keeping adjustment influence to reveal my identity from my usual experience. That’s I want to put into my creative works.
