DIY Natural Adhesive

About

This was my Sustainable Systems Midterm project. I chose to make DIY Natural Adhesive because it sounded fun.

Materials

My project uses Wheat Flour, Sugar, Milk, Water, and Turmeric. For testing, I’m using matte and gloss scrap paper.

Process

I added 1/3 cup of wheat, 1/2 cup of water, 1/4 cup of milk, and 1/4 cup of sugar to a pan. Then I slowly boiled and stirred this for 45 minutes till it had a soup like texture.

Testing

After the glue was boiled, I let cool down for 30 minutes. I then used a brush to apply the glue to 2 different types of paper, matte and gloss. The glue dried after 15 minutes and was successful in bonding the pieces of paper together.

Reflection

1) Yes my tests were successful. I tried the natural adhesive on matte and gloss paper, and it worked on both.

2) I’m pretty sure my natural adhesive is better for the environment than the store-bought glue since it is using natural materials only.

3) No, my process doesn’t require any repairs. It will last for a long time.

4) My tests only require paper and I re-used scrap paper that was lying around which I never purchased.

5) Keeping sustainability in mind, my main goal was to use only natural materials and re-use any material that can be. Wheat, Water, Milk, Sugar, and Turmeric were the components of my glue which are all-natural.

6) The process to make glue was interesting as I improvised and added turmeric to the glue, to give it a yellow color to distinguish it better. The challenge was to stir the glue constantly to avoid the wheat forming large globules.

7) Next time I will use a non-stick pan as the wheat in the bottom got burnt and stuck to the pan.

8) Yes I believe DIY skills are valuable as they are better for the environment and you can develop a new hobby.

9) I wish I could make my own DIY instrument, any instrument works as long as it is in tune.
