Mood-board:

This mood-board uses images such as posters, behind the scene photographs, fan-art and stills from movies to establish a visual identity for itself. The time period I picked starts in 1990 and goes up until 2010. I picked these two decades because of the drastic change in the visual identity of Bollywood films during this time.

Timeline:

This is a list of all the important milestones that shaped this time period. The following diagram shows my favourite top 15 events!

facts/anecdotes –
  1. About references/relatability – In the movie, Andaz apna apna, Salman Khan’s character is asked if he has seen the movie ‘Sholay’ – to which he replies ‘yes, 10 times’. Here, Aamir Khan’s character interjects – ‘His father is the writer’. The fun fact is that Salman Khan’s father, Salim Khan co-wrote Sholay.
  2. About the extent – Indians buy 2.7 billion movie tickets annually, the highest in the world. But the average ticket price is among the lowest in the world, so revenues are a fraction compared to Hollywood.
  3. About romanticising and loyal fans – Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ (The Brave Hearted Will Take Away The Bride) has run at a Mumbai cinema for around 1000 undeterred weeks. It is one of Bollywood’s biggest films of all time.

Bollywood is often represented as colourful, vibrant and lots of dancing. However, there is actually an omnipresent aspect to this subculture. Bollywood seems to be a reflection of the Indian society. Here are some stylish qualities of Bollywood and imagery(I think it’s hard for someone without context to understand this imagery, but someone who subscribes to this subculture would immediately pick up on them.) that no one talks about:

Loud / Exaggerated

Misogynistic

Relatability

Toxic Masculinity/Heroism

Romanticizing

Appropriating

Nostalgic

Prejudiced

Optimistic

Happily ever afters

Acquisitive

Staged
