My teammates and I went to shops to identify and choose the smells we’d like to use. We ended up at a store called Kalustyans at 28th and Lex Ave. I was surprised to see such wide range of aromatics, that too from all over the world! We considered strong scents such as spices, herbs, teas, dried flowers, candied fruits and coffee. After we eliminated sandalwood chips, garlic, cardamom and bay leaves, our final purchase comprised:
- lavender buds
- cloves
- cinnamon sticks
- dried mint leaves
- fennel seeds
- rosemary
- rosebuds
- coffee beans
We also:
-
- ordered cheese cloth from Amazon to make bags
- went to Blicks art store and bought ribbon to tie the bag together
Next Steps:
We plan on putting one or two bags together on 15th September, Wednesday, and testing it on site (The High Line).
Backup:
- In the event the smells are not strong enough, we are planning to soak/wet the bag in the corresponding essence or essential oil before hanging.
- If the cheese cloth doesn’t work, we will use see-through organza bags which are commonly used for potpourri.
