The Learning Portfolio (LP) Workspace is an online site, similar to a blog. The New School has created templates for each program of study that highlight a rolling collection of posts.
a. Home Page
The ELP collects entries or “posts”. These posts are displayed on a main home page. Below is a homepage from Parson’s Huilin Chen, and Lang’s Amanda Miller. Visiting Huilin and Amanda on the ELP is a virtual visit into their workspace.
b. Posts
Posts are entries of content and contain writing and media. Add posts to the ELP when they are assigned in class or add posts independently. The first post below documents Huilin’s studio project. The second post is from Amanda’s writing portfolio.
c. Menus and Tagging
An organized ELP allows clear and quick access to content. The ELP template comes pre-loaded with a menu of categories so that each site is already customized. Do not change the template- it was designed for your program. Remember to categorize and tag! Best practices in posting ask that each post is categorized with a specific course. Tags are used to mark concepts contained in the post.
Below is a menu from Huilin’s ELP.
Tagging posts is a way to denote the main idea of a post in a simple word or phrase. These tags are visible on the front page of the ELP. Over time the building up of tags becomes a way to collect and curate meaning. Note the tags below from Huilin.
