When we see the second frame after the first one, we can see the transition in the boy’s acting. Even though the process was omitted, viewers can imagine that he would’ve grabbed a bottle from the cabinet, opened its cap and poured it to his head. I think this is related to the concept, “Closure”, the process by which the mind fills in missing details between the panel of a comic.
Graphic Novel is a mono-sensory medium, so it only conveys information visually. However, it can represent sound through devices such as word balloons. Even though we can’t actually hear the “Real Sound”, we can imagine it through the sound balloons that writers depicted.
In Graphic Novel, each panel represents each time. Therefore, time in graphic novels depend on viewer’s eyes. When I saw this scene, I thought it was interesting because each panel showed the time flow and also I could see the whole scene of the room from the three frames. I think it is a effective way to depict not only the lapse of time but also the whole scene.
