In this project, we were asked to use one or one and a half yard of fabric to drape a garment. The first thing I did was sketched the look on the sketchbook and went searching for a proper fabric. I chose this particular black fabric because it is light and soft. I felt it was flexible and would be easy for me to shape it. Also in my design there are some part that the pattern can not be made first, therefore a soft fabric will be easier to manipulate.
With the garment, I first made the pattern of the top part. The top part was just a simple fitted top. I made the front part first and then the back part. After i had the top, i began to construct the hood. I picked up a piece of muslin and put it on the head of the mannequin; adjusted the size of it. After I find the perfect size and shape, I began to think about ways which I could attach the hood with the top. In order to made the top attached with the top perfectly, the length of the bottom part of the hood should equal to the length of the collar. I measured them separately and trimmed them until they equal. Several special points such as the middle point and the quarter points were marked because it was necessary for later stitching. Then I cut out the hood with exact same size and shape on my actual fabric. After I finished the part I designed, I began to think about ways I could utilize the rest of the fabrics. I wanted to create some draping in the bottom of the garment. I first folded the fabric with the same distance between each pleat so the draping would look more manageable. Next, I sewed another fabric with the biggest stitch and left threads on each side. I pulled the thread on both side equally and the flowy pleats were made. Then i press the dart open and top stitch the bottom to the top. The final step was to hand stitch the edge of the sleeve. Then the garment was madd.
