Every Week is Fashion Week: p. 44

The passage discusses the growth of fashion weeks in cities beyond just London, Paris, New York and Milan, and the evolution of the fashion calendar. I agree with Corner on the argument that the days of fashion weeks are not numbered. However, the traditional fashion show is growing increasingly irrelevant. With the rise of social media and the internet age, fashion has become more accessible all over, amplifying the creative voices of designers in communities that have never before embraced them. This erases the customary privilege and prestige attached to the role of designer, creating space in the industry for all. In the way that the industry currently functions, designers no longer need to move to a major fashion capitol and keep of with the pace of the traditional calendar. Today’s designers all over are actively creating their own organizations and shows on their terms for their community.

This fashion week renewal can also exists as a celebration of culture. Creative communities that exist outside of fashion capitols possess their own unique cultures that are celebrated amongst one another. For example, Dubai’s fashion week, an organization known as Fashion Forward Dubai, is a huge regional celebration of Arab designers and Arab fashion. I can’t help but think that the beauty in that would be lost if that collective of designers dispersed and moved to larger industries abroad. Smaller fashion weeks across the world are crucial for keeping culture and creativity alive in all communities.
