New School Orientation

Hey! My name is Tanishkaa Kumar and I am from the metropolitan state, Mumbai in India. Being born and brought up in India and belonging to the Hindu community, worshipping God is an important part of my culture

          Painting of Radha-Krishna

This first Artifact is an acrylic painting that I made on the festival of Janmashtami, a once a year festival devoted to the worship of lord Krishna, the eight avatar of lord Vishnu, celebrating his birth anniversary. Janmashtami is a festival celebrated in the month of August and on this day different types of  homemade sweets are made at my house. In my community worship of lord Krishna who plays the flute and his lover Radha. People dress up and ‘pujas’ are held in the houses where the devotees pray by singing the songs of lord Krishna called the ‘bhajans’ which is followed by eating special food.

                                                    Veggies??

An interesting thing about where I live is that everyday the housewives go to the vegetable stalls outside our building to get fresh fruits and vegetables for the family. My mom cooks 3 meals everyday for our family of 5.  This vegetable stall is a small truck filled with different kinds of fruits and vegetables. The fruits are kept in small containers outside the truck and our refilled as the day passes. This moving vegetable store goes throughout the localities selling fresh vegetables to all!

                              Inside Me

My third Artifact is a watercolour self portrait which I will be using to tell you something about myself. This piece is a self portrait that portrays my personality showing the connection between my emotional heart and logical mind. I do not often express this vocally. Thus, the face in the painting is shown calm but the exaggerated heart and the brain emerging out of the body shows what is ‘inside of me’. This is done to show how my emotions and thinking that are connected to each other are often suppressed inside me. However, once I get close to someone, I am like an open book!
