Time Map

This assignment was about mapping our 24 hour day in single frames by clicking pictures of our everyday activities over the period of one day.

The first part of this self-mapping was making a book with each picture on one page showing a single frame at a time in a chronological order. This book when flipped showed the activities we did in a day in our life.

In the second part of the assignment, we had to show our 24 hours in a day with multiple frames together. For this, we struck strips of paper that were 8 inches high and 24inches long and made a long strip with photos in a linear progression. The gap between the photos shows the time intervals each picture was taken in.

The final project was a combination of my pictures in a grid form. I decided to make it in a cycle, starting my day from the center and doing all my activities ending the cycle with the same picture showing my monotonous daily life.

As every 24 hour in my life passes, one day is gone. I believe that every second of our time is important to us and it waits for no one. From waking up in the morning to a ringing alarm and the urge to snooze it makes me realize how every minute of my sleep is precious but the excitement to learn something new in may classes drives me to get out of my bed and take a hot shower in the cold mornings. Sometimes when we are too engrossed in our daily routines, we don’t realize how a 60 minute hour and a 24 hour day just passes by. With my new life here at Parsons and living alone in the dorms, I have realized the importance of time and managing the household work with my classes. Chores like making my bed, going grocery shopping and doing laundry were things that I usually dependent on my parents on. However, with time we all have to learn how to fit these chores in our busy schedules and eventually these frames add up to build our day. I wake up every morning, take a shower, get ready for classes, walk to university center, look at artworks, attend classes, have lunch and dinner, come back, do my work, talk to my mom and go back to bed. Seems like a long day, doesn’t it? Often there are some interesting parts on some days but these activities do not change. Unintentionally, I have formed this time table in my head that I follow daily. It is very hard to deviate from this continuous cycle and I believe that it is a good way to manage my time. Sometimes I feel like I am getting sucked into this monotonous cycle but when I get breaks amidst my routine, the drive to continue moving at the pace with which the hands of the clock moves gets into me. Thus, ending my day with a tranquil smile in my comfortable bed.
