Memory
Due to my dad’s job, my family moves to a new place every two to four years. With every change in the city, came a new home. I always had the excitement to decorate it and my mom always let me decorate my room with my soft fur toys and cotton blanket and colorful cotton pillows. I always wanted to choose the color of my walls and my study table but my parents never let me do that. When we moved to Mumbai in my junior year of high school, my parents decided to renovate our old house there. I really wanted to design my own interior space for my room. Seeing my passion and interest in studying design in college, my dad finally agreed to it and told me that I could design my room. As soon as I got the budget, I rushed to look at designs in the magazines and started to look at the purple-pink color palettes from the carpenter’s books. I always wanted a very fashionable cupboard for my clothes and so I designed it in such a way that when you open the cupboard, you see all the hanging clothes on the metal rod and when you push them aside, there are 5 wooden boxes at the back of the wooden cupboard where you can store others clothes. It was like a closet inside a closet. There was a mirror on the side door and the outside of the purple-pink closet has a simple strip of silver metal. I placed my wooden bed near the windows that had sliding plastic doors and my blackboard right opposite my bed. I designed both my sisters and my study table and put a long mirror in between them. The study tables were the same color as the cupboard and were identical. There was a wooden panel on top of them for all our big school and SAT books. In the drawers, I made compartments for the paper clips, rubber bands, post-it notes and staple pins. I like being organized and so this worked out perfectly. When you opened the huge mirror between our tables, there was a closet inside it. This was for all the makeup and jewelry my sister and I own. I kept the color of the room white to complement it with the purple-pink furniture. My mom decided to hang some canvas paintings of mine above the bed along with a beautiful green criss-cross textured framed picture of my sister and I. My aunt especially got a matching set of silk curtains made for my room. They were floral and added to the aesthetic of the room. I was really happy how my room turned out and the fact that my parents trusted me on this. I love how my entire family was involved in this process and they appreciated my efforts.
