Creative Tech Studio II: Project II, Concept Statement

Hello Everyone!

In this post, I will be documenting my ideas for Project II’s garment. We have been asked as a class, to create a shirt out of a textile inspired by a particular art movement or artist. With that being said, I happened to take inspiration from the Japanese, female artist: Yayoi Kusama. From the onset of her childhood, Yayoi encountered battles with obsessive compulsion which she has carried into her adulthood and reflects this behavior back in beautiful, practical paintings; or exhibitions of her work instead. Many of her subjects contain heavy erotic content, with phallic geometry as one of her top subjects of intense repetition. As a result, I have decided to go about with my own rendition of this as I too also suffer from obsessive compulsive behavior; as an homage to Kusama, I have decided to keep in theme with erotica; but on a more sensual note.

I have played with my own breasts, nipples, and lips to form shapes that create a whimsical and cohesive pattern through potato stamping and black ink on white medium-weight cotton. Other ways, I could alter this look could be on: polyester variants (synthetic satin), muslin (lightweight and medium weight), or even perhaps a light to medium weight canvas. These are textiles I would like to experiment with as far as erotic mark-making. Cheers!

Hello, My name is Megan Taylor, I am a returning student here at Parsons; my major is Fashion Design with a peaking interest in environmentalism and animal welfare; I hope to transform the industry someday...slowly but surely. My wish is to combine luxury and aesthetic appeal with the consciousness of how and where it is made along with the idea of what to do with it after use. I have been following my need to create and share with the world art and fashion since the tender age of eleven years old.
