Students in the Intro Studio 1: Avatar course recently started working and developing ideas regarding their Personal Flag Project– the first of many assignments to come for the course involving the “mining” of your past history, heritage, interests, passions, and the like in order to create a representational flag of “you” and your identity. According to the assignment, the materials that we use in our project to express ourselves should themselves relate to a part or aspect of us, and should thus contribute to the reason and form of the project as it connects to who we are and our lives. Below are some pictures I took of my ideas and ruminations in my sketchbook regarding who I am, and what I aspire to be, as well as what I have experienced, felt, and thought. None of these ideas are final– and it is entirely possible that I will develop a completely new work that more adequately expresses me. For the project, I might choose to display my flag on paper, using utensils such as pencils, pens, and colored pencils, or get a cardboard box of some sort and tape a piece of paper to each face as if to suggest my multifacetedness and my depth of character. Please note: Plagiarism is not and will not be tolerated– these ideas are solely of my own creation and original synthesis, and thus should not ethically be replicated in any way, shape, or form. If you cannot create an original work for a class or project yourself, and you find yourself in a desperate situation, you may play around with a minor aspect of my ideas– but you cannot steal my ideas in their entirety. Also, if it just so happens that any aspect of my ideas and projects offends you as the viewer or reader in any way, please note that (most) of my works are and will be fictional in nature (with the exception of nonfiction works, which relate to history and my arguments for certain philosophies and ideas about history, events, people, etc), and thus should be perceived as my own true opinions or viewpoints on certain controversial subjects. Free, unbound thought is paramount in the college environment. Thank you.
