For my final project in my Drawing and Imaging: Language class prior to my last classes (where sketchbook evaluations and semester work evaluations would take place), I was assigned by my professor to create a final piece using any medium that I wanted, including digital mediums such as Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. Due to my recent love of book covers and minimalist style artwork (a love that I cannot quite explain), I decided for my final project to work on a book cover for a story idea of mine set in a post-apocalyptic world. The story is called “The Beacon” and is set primarily in the major port city of Nuuk in Greenland which was turned into a remote refugee “camp” following the outbreak of World War III, and a horrible disease worse than the Black Death called the Caliban Virus, which turned millions of people into cannibalistic, flesh-eating, skinless cryptid colored bloody red monsters known, fittingly, as “Calibans”. The outbreak of the virus along with the advent of nuclear war led to the collapse of human society in my book, but things are not always as they seem under the new government that was comprised of the most powerful and capable survivors of both the Third War and the Caliban Virus– known as the Pheonix Authority. And as the main characters in my story soon find out, nothing was ever what it seemed in the first place– with “The Beacon” being the centerpiece of it all.
