Collection

 by Ting-En Tsai

When looking at the objects exhibited in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, my imagination, curiosity and interest in history and story brought me to think about what and where they were originally before becoming one of the collection in a museum in the 21th century. Though those objects themselves haven’t changed much, the locations, generations they are in, and the people surrounding them have been dramatically changing through the passing of time. The theme of the book above is performed through my own experience of visiting the Met.

I assembled the book to be an accordion one with a belly band, so it can be read not only as a traditional book, but also as a series of cinematic scenes while the book is standing and stretched. Also, spreads can show the contrast between present and past better than simply using page by page. Besides, I chose cream textured paper as the pages, and drew the illustration with the dip pen and ink to give the book a sense of humanity and antique.
