Reflecting on “Traveling” by Grace Paley

In “Travelling”, Grace Paley is a stranger to the South. However, there is a community that is easily accessible for her to join: the southern white community. All that is asked from her is to follow social norm and believe she is of a superior race. Yet, she decides to stray away from what is expected from her and therefore alienates herself from the southern white community. Instead, she becomes an ally to the black community. Paley is in a position where she is shunned by the white community and unable to join the black community. But like with her mother, Paley finds that the privilege which she was born with can be used in support in the black community.
