Demo B: Overcasting with Paper Mache
Assignment:
Using your own head or a doll/model’s head, create a papier-mâché mask by directly casting from your (or your model’s) face. Your finished mask should be intentionally decorated and/or painted.
Submit: A link to your learning portfolio containing:
- Preliminary research & sketches – concepts, references, anything else that you think adds to your process
- Photos to document your progress
- Comprehensive photos of your final creation, including photos of the mask being worn.
Process:
Initially I attempted to create a face mask modeled after my face. I was not aware of the water to glue ratio and also overlayed the paper mache which heavily delayed the drying process. The dried result was also quite flaky. With this lesson through failure, I switched my plan to create a mold out of my last week’s assignment.
I used parchment paper to lay the form of the figure along with paper tape. Luckily, the mold was able to come off right away and I started to paste the paper directly onto the form.
