“Of all of the modifications wrought upon it, the phenomenon of designer jeans speaks most directly to the garment’s encoding of status ambivalences.”
It is saying that jeans nowadays are completely different, and this apply most to the designer jeans no matter on their price, design, or aim.
Jeans were brought up because of its casualness and reasonable price, and was aimed to designed for working classes. However, jeans nowadays are interpreted in a completely different way. Aside by the price differences, the shape, silhouette now are also changed due to the difference of aim now; jeans now are more considered to be fashion pieces more than its durability and comfort for wearing.
This phenomenon is not only happening on jeans, it happens on lots of previous fashion inventions; like, sneakers. Sneakers now are no longer just for sport-wear or casual outfit, they can now be matched with suit or formal outfit without being seen as under-dressed. They are now jewelled, glamorised as fashion item, which are totally ironic that they were originally aimed as durable and functional.
