Curiosity Journal Day 3

In this small entry, I will talk about a book called ‘Chronicle of a Death Foretold’ written by Gabriel García Márquez. It is a very interesting book that I read during this winter. This book is about the events that occur close in on Santiago Nasar death or I should say murder, a man in his youth who is alleged of taking the virginity of Angela Vicario. On Angela’s wedding night, her husband discovers that she was not virgin and in anger drags her back to her house to her brothers. This is when she puts the blame on Santiago and soon after that her brothers find and kill Nasar. Gabriel brings out many different themes in this book like ritual, death, and honor. She puts forth this idea with the help of different characters, their beliefs, and their actions. This book is written in the third perspective which makes it very engaging as all the scenes sound like memoirs which might or might not have taken place as described.

The part that fascinated me the most was the character ‘Santiago Nasar’. While most of the narrative focus on him, Nasar stays a mystery till the end. This very much left an impression of him in my mind which made me very eager to wait for him to actually show up. He is a cold-hearted child of a marriage of convenience. His father is dead but he stills gets the love of firearms, valor, and prudence from him. The narration strongly suggested that he was innocent of the crime and he was all confused at the time of death. More important was the way he was killed, it was very similar to the crucifixion of Jesus for the sins of other people.
