“Body Politic” was a project that required us to use images of two different people to create a new body or form.
I was inspired by my religious background to create something that felt powerful but also magical. I chose to recreate the Hindu goddess Kali specifically making a reference to her several pairs of arms. The goddess Kali is known as the goddess of time and change. She was always represented in the most frightful way but is really the annihilator of evil.
I created two separate images, one with a combination of me and my classmates images and one of me alone. I took several images of the both us at different stages of one movement and overlapped them.
Both images came out differently because the image of me alone had a more smooth effect as compared to the chaotic appearance of the second image. Both represent a side of goddess Kali – the chaotic image aims to highlight the hypocrisy of her killing but the smooth image shows how her actions, in the end, result in peace.
